Authenticity is a constraint, not a mood

If your positioning would survive being handed to a competitor, it was never really yours.
Authenticity has become a tone of voice: warm, plain-spoken, a bit self-deprecating. That is a style choice, and any brand can buy it.
Used properly, authenticity is a constraint. It rules things out. It means you cannot claim a strength you have not built, cannot promise a service you cannot staff, and cannot borrow a story that belongs to someone else.
The test is simple. Print your positioning, remove your name, and hand it to your closest competitor. If they could adopt it on Monday without changing anything about how they operate, it is not a position. It is a mood.
